How to Crochet a Circle in a Square

This crocheted motif starts out as a circle then morphs into a square!

This crocheted motif starts out as a circle, then morphs into a square!

Here is a list of the materials you will need to complete this square:

Small amount of white worsted weight yarn

Size H crochet hook

Tapestry needle (for weaving ends in)

Scissors

Size: This square measures approximately  three and a half inches square.

Round One: Chain four, join with a slip stitch in the first chain to form a ring, chain three, work eleven double crochets into the ring you just made, join with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain three of round (you will now have a total of twelve double crochets, counting the chain three as one double crochet).

Round Two: Chain three, work one double crochet into the same double crochet as beginning chain three, work two double crochets into the next double crochet and into each double crochet around, join with a slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain three of round (you will now have a total of twenty-four double crochets, counting the beginning chain three as one double crochet).

Round Three: Chain three, work (one double crochet, one treble crochet, and two double crochets) into the same double crochet as beginning chain three (your first corner is now formed), work one double crochet into each of the next five double crochets, work (two double crochets, one treble crochet, and two double crochets) into the next double crochet (your second corner is now formed), work one double crochet into each of the next five double crochets, work (two double crochets, one treble crochet, and two double crochets) into the next double crochet (your third corner is now formed), work one double crochet into each of the next five double crochets, work (two double crochets, one treble crochet, and two double crochets) into the next double crochet (your fourth and final corner is now formed), work one double crochet into each of the remaining five double crochets of round, join with a slip stitch in the top of beginning chain three (you will now have a total of forty stitches in Round Three, counting the beginning chain three as one stitch). Fasten off work at this point and weave ends in securely.

Suggested color variations for this square:

1. Work each round in a different color for a "scrappy" look.

2. Work Rounds One and Two (your circle) in one color, then Round Three in a different color.  This color scheme would better accent the circle in your square.
